WIRE OPERA HOUSE - STONE QUARRIES PARK PAULO LEMINSKI 

 


    The Wire Opera House with its tubular structure and transparent roof is one of Curitiba's emblematic symbols. Inaugurated in 1992, it gives place to all kinds of events, from pop to classic and has capacity for 1648 spectators.

    Surrounded by lakes, native vegetation and cascades in a singular landscape, it belongs to the Stone Quarries Park and so does the Cultural Space Paulo Leminski , where staging of the Passion of Christ and other important events take place since 1989. It is able to accommodate 20.000 people. In the magic night of April 4, 1993 the place was a stage for the concert of the famous tenor JosŽ Carreras and the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra to celebrate Curitiba's 300th Anniversary.

BOTANICAL GARDEN
 

 

    Inaugurated in 1991, it is one of the most visited places in Curitiba. Created likewise the French Gardens, it unfolds a flower carpet to the visitors, right in the entrance. The green house built with a metallic structure contains botanical species and a water spring as well. The native vegetation is mixed with walking tracks.

    The Botanical Garden, managed by Gert Hatschbach attracts researchers from all over the world. It offers place to exhibitions, library and an auditorium. Behind the green house there is a permanent exhibition of Frans Kraycberg with 114 sculptures of that artist and environmentalist.

MEMORIAL OF CURITIBA

 

 


    T
he Largo da Ordem Square shelters a continuos humanity fount: the Memorial of Curitiba. It is a space for the art and for the folklore, information and memory, past and future. Built onto an irregular terrain, its architectonic project allows functional and creative installations.
The painted dome makes evident its roll as a cultural spreader.

MEMORIAL OF POLISH IMMIGRATION

 


    T
he Memorial of Polish Immigration that was inaugurated in 13th December 1980, after the visit of the Pope João Pablo II to the city of Curitiba, in June, in the same year. Its area is 46 thousand square meters was part of the dispossession of the old Candles plant.

    The seven trunks wood houses are parts of this memorial area, as Polish Immigrants souvenir and their faith and fight. Objects like the old wagon, the pipe of cabbage and the black virgin of Czestochowa print, who is the protector saint of Polish people are parts of its quantity.  The Polish immigration to the Curitiba City had been in the 1871 year.

GERMAN WOODS

 

    Inaugurated in 1996, this woods have several facilities that reminds and promotes German’s traditions. The woods has 38 thousand square meter of native vegetation that belonged to Schaffer’s family farm. The replica of an ancient wooden church with neogotic details, built on 1933 in the region of bairro Seminário, has a concert hall called Bach’s Oratory.

    Other attractions are the João and Maria’s track that tells the Grimm’s brothers story, a Children’s Library, The Philosopher’s Tower, a wooden structure that allows a panoramic view of the city, Serra do Mar mountains and the Germanic Poetry Square, with a reproduction of Mila’s House front, a German building from the beginning of the last century originally located downtown.

ARABE MEMORIAL 

 

    This building has morisco architecture elements like vault, column, arches and windows. It was built in honor to the Middle East culture and it has a specialized library. 

    This cubed shaped building has 140 square meter and sits on water. The sculpture of the writer Gibran Kalil Gibran sits on a marble pedestal indoors.

PANORAMIC TOWER  
 

 

    This cell phone tower was built on the highest ground of Curitiba and it is 109.5 meters height, with 1.050 meters height above sea level, allowing a 360 degrees panoramic view of the city. The tower was inaugurated on December 17th 1991 and it is managed by Brasil Telecom and Instituto Municipal de Turismo. Video presentation, tourist information and a Telephone Museum are available in the tower.

TOURISM LINE

The  Linha Turismo is a special city tour that visits the main tourist attractions in Curitiba.
It is possible to visit the parks, squares and the rest of the city's tourist attractions.
    Considered one of the best in the country, the  Linha Turismo is available every thirty minutes and has a two and a half-hour tour, which travels around forty-four kilometers. The tour starts at  Praça Tiradentes, but it is possible to join the tour at any moment.
To go on the tour you must buy a voucher pad with five vouchers that give you the right to get on and off bus four times. Get to know the Tourism Line - Linha Turismo and travel around Curitiba.

1. PRAÇA TIRADENTES
    Considered to be the city's starting point, the "Catedral Basílica de Nossa Senhora da Luz" is located in Praça Tiradentes. Built in Gothic style, it was recuperated for its centennial, in 1993.

    Part of Curitiba's main street, it was the country's first "calçadão" (black and white decorated street exclusive for pedrestrians). It is one of the marks of the city's cultural revolution.

4. MUSEU FERROVIÁRIO
   
Built in the old railway station, it shows how the station would have looked a century ago. The building next to it is the Shopping Estação mall, in which the Museu da Farmácia, and the Estação Convention Center, a very modern events centre, can be found.

5. TEATRO DO PAIOL
   
Built in 1906, the old gunpowder storeroom was "recycled" into an arena shaped theater in 1971. Baptized by the poet Vinícius de Moraes, it marks the beginning of Curitiba's cultural transformation.

6. JARDIM BOTÂNICO
   
Curitiba's trademark, it was opened in 1991. Its metallic structure holds botanical species that are national references.

7. RODOFERROVIÁRIA/MERCADO MUNICIPAL
   
On its inauguration in 1972, the Rodoferroviária represented a mark for the country regarding transportation terminals, due its modern and functional conception. The Municipal market is the tradicional point for people seeking delicacies from around the world.

8. TEATRO GUAÍRA/UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL
   
The Teatro Guaíra is located in the Praça Santos Andrade, and it's one of Latin America's largest theaters. On the other side of the square, is the Federal University of Paraná, the first University in Brazil.

9.LIBERTY PALACE
    It's a constrution dated from 1916, former Cty Hall of Curitiba.built in brick over concrete blocks and  masonry, with neoclassical and art nouveau. It is registered by Institute of Historical and Artistic Patrimony (IPHAN). New restaration porject respected the original characteristics of the building. Currently it is a cultural centre.

10. MEMORIAL ÁRABE/PASSEIO PÚBLICO
    Located in the Praça Gibran Khalil, the Memorial is a modern construction, inspired on the people of the desert. Inside the building a library can be found.
The Passeio Páblico was the first public park and also the first zoo in Curitiba. It used to host large animals, nowdays only small ones can be seen.

11. CENTRO CÍVICO
    Headquarters for Paraná's state council, it was built in 1953, on the centennial of the State's political emancipation.

12. MUSEU OSCAR NIEMEYER
   
It is the largest and the most modern museum in Brazil. Designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, the "Eye" completes one of this constructions that he built himself, in 1976.

13. BOSQUE DO PAPA/MEMORIAL POLONÊS
   
Memorial of the Polish immigration, it is composed of seven houses made of woodenlogs, tucked away in native woods. It was opened in 1980, soon after Pope John Paul II's visit to Curitiba.

14. BOSQUE ALEMÃO
    The "Bosque Alemão" is dedicated to the German immigrants. Its special attractions include the Hansel and Gretel Trail, taken from one of the Brothers Grimm's tales. The  Enchanted House, the Bach Oratorium and the "Torre dos Filósofos" (The Philosopher's Tower), which has a magnificent view of Curitiba.

15. UNIVERSIDADE LIVRE DO MEIO AMBIENTE/UNILIVRE
    Amid the green forest of Zaninelli and with the presence of oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, the Universidade Livre do Meio Ambiente was opened in 1992. It is the first university i n the world created to study the development of environmental preservation.

16. PARQUE SÃO LOURENÇO
    An old glue factory gave way to the Creativity Center, with courses, workshops and exhibition rooms. The park also has a race track and a lake and is surrounded by native forest.

17. ÓPERA DE ARAME/PEDREIRA PAULO LEMINSKI
    Built in a tube-like struture, the Ópera de Arame, from 1992, is a magical space that integrantes into the nature of its surroundings.
Next to the opera house is the quarry Pedreira Paulo Leminski, which is stage to great cultural and artistic events in Curitiba.

18. PARQUE TANGUÁ
    An example of urban space being re-utilized. With an area of 450.000 m2 , it was built on old quarries. Highlights for the tunnel that crosses the Rock, joining the two lakes.

19. PARQUE TINGÜI
   
Parque Tingüi reminds us of the first occupants of the "Campos de Curitiba" the Indians of the Guarani nation.

20. MEMORIAL UCRANIANO
   
A replica of Saint Michael's Church, in the Mountain of Tiger, in Mallet, it has roofing made of pine and a bronze dome. Located in Parque Tingüi, it is dedicated to the centennial of the arrival of the Polish pioneers.

21. PORTAL ITALIANO
    The Portal shows the beginning of the neighborhood Santa Felicidade, imitating the typical buildings of this Italian immigrant's neighborhood.

22. SANTA FELICIDADE
    Colony started in 1878 by italian immigrants. It is Curitiba's main gastronomic center and is a show of typical houses, which are preserved for historical, architectural or mearly sentimental reasons.

23. PARQUE BARIGÜI
    Opened in 1972, it is one of the largest in the city, being a safe haven for several native, and migratory animals. It was also chosen by Curitibanos as one of the favorite parks for taking daily walks. The park has gym equipment and an amusement park, besides having a space for exhibitions and events, and an Automobile Museum.

24. TORRE PANORÂMICA
    The only telephone tower in Brazil with an observation deck for sight-seeing that is open for visitation. One hundred and nine and a half meters  high, it was opened in 1991 and it is one of the most visited touristic points in Curitiba. The watch tower has a view of 360°.

25. SETOR HISTÓRICO
    The church São Francisco de Paula ruins, which was never completed, the Relógio das Flores (a working clock made of flowers) the fountain "Fonte da Memória", old churches and reformed old mansions that are turned into cultural spaces, make up the historical sector of the city, where one of the most prominent features is the memorial dedicated to Curitiba,  the Memorial de Curitiba. On Sunday mornings there are, at Igreja do Rosário, a mass for the tourists and also on the street, a crafts fair, a meeting point for Curitibanos.
